Radar Detectors?

Recommended Posts

Been looking more and more at radar/laser detection...

I know several riders here use them and i'd like some advice, Brand, Securing to the bike, How do you hear it? Should I buy one made just for bikes?

Galen, Steve, DrJ, I'm sure there are more...

Thanks!

How much aren't you willing to spend?

I currently have a Bel RX65 that I use in the car and am slowly working on adapting to the bike. I'll also most likely end up getting the H.A.R.D System (wireless L.E.D. transmitter) to go along with it.

I'd love to get a Escort PASSPORT iQ, but not until it's been out for a while, all the bugs have been worked out, and the price goes down.

As far as securing to the bike, RAM mounts are the way to go IMO...prolly need a Powerlet adapter as well.

I bought the best Belltronics I could afford. It is not waterproof I've got 4 of them ranging in age from 10 years old to nearly new. The one on my bike is about 2 years old. Look at your possible places to mount it... then go out and ride your bike... put your finger on the various places that you might mount and check for "Buzzy" vibrations or "hard bumps". Mine ended up being mounted to my handle bars even though they are "Buzzy". I originally bought a tech mount but it put the thing up too high in my face and I just kept watching the radar detector instead of the road. So I used an office binder clip and some pipe insulation to deaden the "buzz" and protect the handle bars. This keeps the device down below the wind screen and out of my face. There is also a mounting method where you drill a couple of holes in your wind shield and bolt the clip that is normally used to "suction cup" your device to the wind shield.

Power... DIRECT WIRE IT TO THE BATTERY. The power on your motorcycle fluctuates and even wired to the battery detectors with Laser capabilities will give a number of false alarms... The Beltronics has a "city" mode that you can turn on when you are heading down DD to reduce the number of false alarms and maintain your concentration, but still provides a modicum of protection.

Most detectors have a mono headphone jack that is the same as any head phones you would plug into a walk man but you are only going to hear the detector in one ear. You can get extension cords at radio shack and just wear head phones to hear the alarms or get one of "them thar" fancy led lights that you mount in your field of vision. I bring a wire up to my helmet and plug it into my Chatterbox and hear it that way. There are many ways to bring the sound to your head... There are some expensive options if you are one of those that wishes to listen to music. Then you have to find a way to blend the detector output with the music output and then also with your voice direction GPS. I have not been able to find a detector that has bluetooth built in. There was one on the market for a while but it was a lousy detector with even worse bluetooth reliability. This is a place where when the thing goes off... you want to know it... use a wire up to your ear. I've ridden other peoples bikes with the LED's flashing in the day light and I never even noticed them.

There are waterproof detectors made just for bikes... the reviews on their detection capabilities aren't that great that I've seen... just get used to carrying a baggy and rubber band around with you... (or you could just use a magnum :))

Thanks for the input gentlemen, :whistling: Looks like I've got a little more research to do. I'm thinking the under handle bar mount and getting a chatterbox at the same time is the way to go...I've already got power up to the front for the heated grips, should be plenty left over for the detector.

What is this magnum? :wannascrew:

Bel and Escort are basically the same company BTW.

Do they both recommend the use of magnum's?

LOL...that thing's so sweet, idn't it? Some sorry sucka needs to spend that metric ass-ton of $$$ and let us know how it works. I haven't seen any reviews of it yet...but then again, I haven't really searched for them.

True that, Dave. I ride with the knowledge that I'm responsible for the actions of my motorcycle. I don't knock people for having radar detectors, I just personally don't put any faith in them that they'll prevent me from getting pulled over and receiving a ticket. Too many variables. The reality is that sometimes you have to pay to play. Above all I DON'T believe in running. Puts too many others in jeopardy. When you're tagged, you're it!

Radar Detectors - I've probably paid out more $$$ for detectors than I would have paid in fines but saved a lot of time. 255 1 or 2 days a week... I go from 80 to 60 and watch people get pulled over behind me.

Run-no never :whistling:

Agreed that if you have a detector, I'm betting your pretty much screwed as far as getting a "warning" versus a ticket (although I do have a Passport x50 in the cage).

As for the new IQ, I'm kind of curious about the mounting arrangement. It appears that the radar horn and laser eyes are on the back and on the face of the unit. So, for best reception, wouldn't the unit have to mounted so the screen is perfectly vertical? If so, I don't think that would be very beneficial to motorcycle mounting nor visibility of the screen. UNLESS the screen and or the horns/eyes are pivotable.

Oh, and since I own an x50, I can trade-up and get a discount thru Escort. SOOOO, I could be a guinea pig and test it out for the club if everybody wants to get a donation/fundraiser together! :broke: haha!

Holy thread revival Batman.  I know of no vertical mounts per se, what are you trying to mount it to?
