Former MotoGP champion and current Honda World Superbike factory rider Nicky Hayden is in serious condition, having sustained injuries in a road accident in Italy.

Hayden, 35, was cycling with friends on a road close to Rimini on Wednesday when a road car collided with his bicycle, the American ending up on the hood of the car and impacting against its windshield.

He was rushed to a hospital in Rimini with severe head and chest trauma - and remains in serious condition.

A native of Kentucky, Hayden was a MotoGP world championship mainstay between 2003 and 2015, having raced for the Honda and Ducati factory teams, as well as then-Honda privateer outfit Aspar.

He famously pipped Valentino Rossi to the 2006 MotoGP crown and scored a total of three premier class wins – all with Honda.

Although he featured in MotoGP as recently as last year, subbing for Jack Miller at Marc VDS Honda and for Dani Pedrosa at the factory Honda team, Hayden has focused on World Superbikes for the past two campaigns.

He finished fifth in Superbikes last year, securing Honda's only win of the season in Malaysia, and currently sits 13th in the 2017 standings.

Honda World Superbike rider said to be heavily injured after collision with car during bicycle ride in Rimini.

Reports coming in from Italy are stating that 2006 MotoGP champion motorcycle racer Nicky Hayden has suffered dramatic injuries in a collision with a Peugeot in Rimini.

According to onlookers, 36-year-old Hayden – who is a keen cyclist – was riding with a group of fourteen others when the incident took place. It has been reported that he was involved in a direct collision with the car, and that the collision saw Hayden thrown over the bonnet and into the windscreen.

Ambulances and medics on site treated the injury as life-threatening and soon after he was transferred to a hospital in Rimini where he was treated for severe chest and head trauma.

At 18:00 some four hours after the accident, Rimini hospital staff announced that he’d been moved to the major trauma unit in Cesenate for possible surgery, with his condition at the time being referred to as ‘critical’.

“The rider is in very serious condition and has now been moved to intensive care” – Dr. Senni, Cesena Hospital Press Office

US-based motorcycling website Asphalt & Rubber are reporting that Hayden has received surgery and is now in a ‘medically induced coma’, a state in which he’s likely to remain for the next 24 hours. [unconfirmed]

The Police Commander of the district, Pierpaolo Marullo, has announced some details of the incident,

“At 16:50, three hours after the accident, my men continue to gather evidence for the case, which we consider to be serious. When the officers arrived at the scene, the wounded man was still at the edge of the road, being stabilised by medical teams. He was then transferred to the Red Cross Hospital of Infermi di Rimini.

Our first study of the facts would appear to show that the blow has occurred with the right front tyre of the car and that the cyclist involved was separate from the group at the time of the collision.”

Photographs from local newspaper, Rimni today, show the full extent of the damage to both the Renault and to Hayden’s bicycle.

The accident is understood to have taken place at 14:00 (local time) whilst Hayden was riding within the Riccione Taveloto-provincial district. He is believed to have been riding within the centre of a group of fourteen bicycle riders, but there is no further information with regards to any injuries suffered by any other members of the group, or the driver.

Motofire has spoken with sources close to the rider and understand that his injuries are ‘critical’.

Photos from Italian newspaper La Repubblica show the extent of the damage to both car and bicycle.

The collision damage with the car clearly shows several impact areas within the windscreen and major damage to the roof of the vehicle. The bicycle – left in the grass verge – would appear to have a broken frame.

Hayden is well known for his love of cycling and spends much of his free time on two wheels of the pedal variety. In an interview way back in 2006 with Cyclingnews he spoke fondly of having discovered the benefits and joy of cycling some three years previously,

“When I started I mainly did it for training, but now it’s something I really like to do … “

Nicky had to be one of if not the very best overall Moto GP racer of our time.  His actions off the track and on the track always honorable.  Overall great guy and he will be missed in the entire motorcycle racing world as well as so many other areas he had huge impacts in.
